SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Following successful European expansions into London and Paris, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, officially announced on February 6th that it will establish its first office in Germany in Bavaria’s capital city Munich. Germany’s dynamic and diverse economy—the largest in EMEA and the fourth largest globally—makes this expansion one of OpenAI’s most significant and strategic moves to date.
As for why the AI giant chose the “Silicon Valley of Germany” for its next European expansion, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated, “Germany is renowned for its technical expertise, academic excellence, and industrial innovation.” Altman further added, “So it’s no surprise it has become a world leader in AI adoption. Opening our first office in Germany means we can help even more people, businesses, and institutions benefit from AI’s possibilities.”
With this expansion into Munich, OpenAI will join other tech giants in the region, such as Google, Apple, NVIDIA, Amazon, and IBM, all of which have made significant investments in Bavaria.
Bavarian U.S. Offices supported the AI titan on multiple fronts over the past two years and was thrilled to see it all culminate in the successful decision to expand to Germany’s thriving tech hub.
In response to OpenAI’s announcement, Bavarian State Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger proudly commented that OpenAI’s decision to locate in Munich is the best proof of Bavaria’s attractiveness when it comes to future technologies.
