Huawei is expanding its investment in Germany in 2017 with the construction of a site for precision manufacturing in Weilheim, Bavaria. The production of telecommunication network technology components is scheduled to launch at the end of 2017.
Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Ilse Aigner comments: “We very much welcome the fact that as a globally leading technology company Huawei is expanding its commitment in Bavaria beyond its European research centre in Munich. Huawei’s investments and the construction of a site for precision manufacturing in Bavaria substantiate the state’s extraordinary desirability as a location for high-tech production:
The infrastructure, skilled personnel and research speak in favour of Bavaria as a centre for production and innovation. And this not only applies to major urban areas but, as the new location of Weilheim shows, it applies across the state in rural areas too.”
The company justifies the decision in favour of the Weilheim location with Bavaria’s worldwide respected expertise in precision manufacturing as well as the superb logistics, communications and energy infrastructure. Huawei and Bavaria have complementary strengths and world-class capabilities in production, according to the company. The settlement project was also strongly supported by Invest in Bavaria, the business promotion agency for the State of Bavaria.
40 employees are expected to work at the new plant by the end of 2017, then 60 employees by the end of 2018. The engineers and skilled technical personnel are predominantly going to be appointed locally. This simultaneous investment in Bavaria follows Huawei’s globalisation strategy: As a global company, it is going to strengthen local markets through investments and combine its high level of innovation in information and communication technology with local excellence.
Roughly 400 employees work at Huawei’s European research centre in Munich, among other things on future technologies such as the next 5G generation mobile networks and car-to-car communication, which will enable autonomous driving.
