German State of Bavaria’s Lieutenant Governor / Minister of Economy, Ilse Aigner launches new presence in Cambridge, MA to foster cooperation between the States of Massachusetts and Bavaria.
Cambridge, MA — June 16, 2016
Bavarian Lieutenant Governor / Minister of Economy, Ilse Aigner officially inaugurated the German State of Bavaria’s US Offices’ new presence in metro Boston on June 16, 2016.
In Washington DC and metro Boston, Minister Aigner led an expert delegation of over 30 Bavarian companies and startup initiatives such as Bits and Pretzels and MUST, academia and scientists from Bavaria’s renowned universities and institutes such as Fraunhofer Institute, as well as representatives from Bavaria’s award winning clusters of excellence in MedTech (Medical Valley) and BioTech (BioM). The delegation’s three day visit in the USA offered many valuable opportunities to foster existing and establish new relationships both on the government and industry level. From political talks with Michael Froman, U.S. Trade Representative and Karyn Polito, Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts to company visits at Draper, Biogen, IBM Watson Health and a lively discussion with Forbes’ #6 data scientist worldwide Professor Sandy Pentland (MIT) on his research on how social networks can make us smarter, Minister Aigner and her expert delegation gained insights especially into Massachusetts’ Life Science and IT sectors as well as its unique innovation ecosystem culminating with the official inauguration ceremony.
Following the trend of highly innovative co-working spaces, the State of Bavaria’s US Offices opened its doors at the Cambridge Innovation Center in Cambridge to become local in the Boston area. Together with German Consul General Ralf Horlemann, Massachusetts Assistant Secretary of Business Development Nam Pham and CIC’s Global Partnerships Lead Jamal Halepota, Minister Aigner officially inaugurated the new Bavarian presence followed by an opening reception in Kendall Square with 100 honored guests. This co-working office will serve as first step to foster Bavaria’s presence as the go to organization for US companies considering expansion to Europe, especially to Bavaria/Germany. The first Bavarian partner of this presence is the Medical Valley GmbH as part of its internationalization into the Boston area. Medical Valley is seeking US-Bavarian R&D projects to be partially funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
